Trans In The World - Mandy In The Pearl River Delta - Shenzhen, The Garden Is Everywhere
Shenzhen was the reason I went to the Pearl River Delta - the prospect of a city built in the near-present for the future, an entirely post-modern, post-history place. And so it was, but with its roots actually in the Old Chinese City. At the same time I had during this period a big pre-occupation with Gardens. This action carried out one morning in central Shenzhen had me taking some craft and printed materials and picking up some litter along the way to claim a small square of the concourse for a small garden which maybe in some way intuited a different tradition from the modernity all around.
The making gained attention, but no prohibition from the police, and it became a fine small thing before I left it and, despite some protests from the remaining spectators, the street sweeper removed it it. And Vincent Assante Di Cupillo, with his usual documentary thoroughness and sensitive reportage captured its whole life-cycle.
