I have to make a special effort to access and watch programmes and the ones I seek out are generally ones with trans as their subject. All the same I know a lot about how television works as a medium, and I do know enough about Channel 4 to be able to say that it has a lot to answer for. Every media strand has its demographic and I suspect that, just as “Friends” attracted an audience of pubescent teens (and younger), the audience for much of the Channel’s output is not the New Youth it so often portrays but an older crowd enamoured of this fervid generation, in all its entitled, empowered, confused, distraught, tired and emotional, overwhelming and overwhelmed presence.
